Business: Ex3.

Location: 1380 W. Auto Drive, Tempe.

Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Information: (480) 756-9393 or www.ex3.com.

Story behind the name: When Efficient Enterprise Engineering Inc. became too cumbersome to repeat frequently to customers, the owner shortened the name to Ex3.

What it does: Create Web-based, multilanguage data management software to help companies track occupational health, safety incidents, inventories, security reports and investigations, chemical and biohazard materials, vehicle incidents, human resources data and industrial hygiene.

It also does field surveys and provides mission task analysis for the military.

How it does it: Seek to replace multiple unproductive, non-interactive systems with one program that manages global records in real-time reporting so that companies have up-to-date information about any business process.

Products/services: Multiple software modules based on basic management software can be implemented individually or in a combination to work with one database and other internal systems.

Also works with PDAs, bar code scanning.

Customers: Large multinational Fortune 500 corporations and agencies such as auto manufacturers, Intel, Texron Corp., NASA, Los Alamos National Laboratory, the U.S. Department of Defense, Air Force, Navy, U.S. Department of Energy.

Facilities: 9,000 square feet in Tempe; an office in Cleveland serving NASA and Detroit carmakers; a backup and data recovery center in a former nuclear bunker in central Kansas; marketing representatives in other U.S. cities and Asia.

Employees: 50 in Tempe.

Owner: Nathan Giles, 47, is president and chief executive officer. A former resident of Ahwatukee, he now lives in Mesa where he keeps a collection of antique cars.

Giles attended Phoenix College and previously worked with the Arizona Department of Transportation and Salt Lake City.

History: In 1994, working as an independent contractor for Intel, Giles created a product that monitored all business processes, from a wellness program to industrial hygiene and chipmaking facility automation.

In 1997, he formed Ex3 and acquired the rights to the software he designed. He bought the company's existing location in 2003.

Secret of success: Developing and keeping solid, ongoing relationships with clients.

"I take a personal interest in every project," Giles said. "They all have my cell number and, yes, I have been called at 3 a.m. from Israel."
