Safety Driving Tips for Memorial Weekend

According to the National Safety Council the estimate for traffic fatalities on the Memorial Weekend holiday period is 409 deaths and 47,000 seriously injured in motor vehicle accidents.  The three-day holiday period begins at 6 p.m. ET Friday, May 26 and ends at 11:59 p.m. ET Monday, May 29.

Memorial Day is a holiday honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military and many Americans observe this day by visiting cemeteries or memorials and participating in parades. It also marks the start of summer and is considered to be a time to hold family gatherings and spend time with family and friends.

“More people will get away this Memorial Day weekend than have in the past 12 years, with 39.3 million U.S. travelers expected to take to the road, skies, rails and water, according to a forecast released Wednesday from auto club AAA.”

So while you’re heading to your favorite destinations consider these safety driving tips NSC for Memorial Weekend.

  • Buckle Up

Wear a seat belt on every trip. About 159 lives may be saved during the holiday with seat belt use, according to the NSC.

  • Use Child Safety Seats

Make sure children are restrained in safety seats that are appropriate for their height, age and weight.

  • Assign a Designated Driver

Designate an alcohol and drug-free driver or arrange alternate transportation. Impairment begins with the first drink.

  • Take Breaks While Traveling

Get plenty of sleep and take regular breaks to avoid fatigue.

  • Don’t Get Distracted

Never use a cell phone behind the wheel, even hands-free.

  • Don’t Let Teens Drive

Do not allow teens to drive with their friends. A single young passenger can increase a teen driver’s fatal crash risk 44 percent, the NSC estimates.

Have a safe Memorial Weekend!

Ex3 Success Stories

Intel Corporation

Intel is a leader in EHS performance and has a track record of heightening the health and safety performance of not only their employees but also the contractors that work for them and the communities in which they are located.  The Ex3 enterprise EHS software solution was implemented at Intel 1996 and modules have been in production for over 20 years at Intel, allowing managers to better their case investigations, management and gather indicators to further lower if not eliminate injuries and illnesses from the workplace.  In 2001, the National Safety Council awarded the Green Cross for Safety to Intel for “exemplary commitment to workplace safety.”  The following are some the exemplary results achieved by Intel in partnership with Ex3:

Decrease in Worker’s Compensation  reports from 1119 cases to 485 over a 5-year period.  (This was as the overall head count rose dramatically from 41,138 to 69,353 employees)

Decreased Worker’s Compensation Case cost per employee of $110 to $33 per case over a 5-year period.

Prior to the Ex3 system implementation, average days away were 14.  Since implementation, average reduced to 2 days.

Dollars saved by placing workers on modified duty savings (salary and replacement salary): $6,170,720.00 per year.*

Fewer recordable injuries and illnesses and Lost Day Cases (LDC):  case managers were able to lower the Recordable rate which was 3.6 in 1993 to a world-leading .20 in 2004, saving over $65 million dollars through LDC reduction.

Armed with the ability to focus their decision on specific areas, managers instituted programs that resulted in the reduction of Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTDs) by over 70 percent.

Corporate-wide data roll-up that typically has to take 2-4 months to accomplish and was available only on an annual basis now takes only seconds to produce and is real-time across the organization.

Costs that were avoided or saved with Medical Monitoring Management:  employees have the ability to enter and update dynamic questionnaires without a visit to nursing office leading to the following savings.  Tech time saved: $90,500 per year; nurse time saved: $64,500 per year; data entry time saved: $90,500 per year; cost avoidance – biostatistician: $17,000 per year; Total Medical Monitoring Savings: $262,500 per year.*

After ex3 came to NASA no further major accidents occurred on the shuttle program

In May of 2003, NASA selected the Ex3 enterprise EHS software solution and implementation of the Ex3 system was completed at all NASA centers by June of 2004. Ex3 then assumed responsibility for all aspects of providing, hosting and supporting NASA’s agency-wide safety system from 2004 through the end of the space shuttle program in 2012.

In addition to being a replacement of obsolete functionality, the design and scalability of the Ex3 enterprise EHS Software system led to changes in how the data was gathered across NASA.

In June 2005, The NASA Group Achievement Award was presented to the NASA and Ex3 combined project team for “exceptional support in the design, build, and NASA agency wide deployment of a new Web-based enhanced Incident Reporting and Information System.”  This is the most prestigious group award given to NASA and contractor employees, according to NASA Human Resources.

Benefits realized by NASA through the use of the Ex3 enterprise EHS software solution

Improved communications between safety professionals, supervisors, medical and workers compensations, and on- and off-site contractors were achieved.  Standard reports were now being provided.  The NASA/ Ex3 system provided a means of “one stop” data collection allowing for standardized reports to be auto-generated for senior management and analysts.

Information access: “the right information to the right people at the right time”. The implementation of the Ex3 enterprise EHS software solution resulted in the elimination of multiple dysfunctional and redundant databases.  “One NASA” database with web accessibility became ready for use by all new projects and contractors.  Real-time agency wide Information became easily accessible to senior management.

Tracking and closure of corrective actions:   The Ex3 enterprise EHS software solution at NASA supported the assignment, notification & tracking of corrective actions along with instant visibility into status, “time to closure.”

Structured data entry, trending, analysis and standardized entry have allowed for improved reporting and data collection while immediate performance metric for analysis support management decision-making processes.

Above all, efficient engineering of NASA processes and safety systems by Ex3 streamlined tracking of all “incidents” including building and facility inspections, fire safety inspections, and security incidents to report unprecedented cost savings for the agency.

Los Alamos National Laboratory

After Los Alamos National Laboratory experienced the massive Cerro Grande forest fire of 2000 Ex3 was called in to help.

Fire at Los Alamos
Fire threatens Los Alamos National Laboratory

As fire threatened the facility first responders had inadequate knowledge of specific contents of threatened laboratories. This hindered their ability to properly plan and execute proper protective practices. Ex3 was hired to implement our enterprise EHS software solution including  modules for chemical inventory management and the tracking of laser and radiological sealed sources and select biologic agents. Ex3 implemented the Ex3 enterprise EHS solution Laboratory wide.

2017 OSHA Final Rule for Digital Reporting – New Regulations

“Our new rule will ‘nudge’ employers to prevent work injuries to show investors, job seekers, customers and the public they operate safe and well-managed facilities. Access to injury data will also help OSHA better target compliance assistance and enforcement resources, and enable ‘big data’ researchers to apply their skills to making workplaces safer.”

-Dr. David Michaels, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health

The New OSHA Digital Reporting Rule

The new OSHA rule taking effect Jan 1, 2017, requires electronic submittal of injury and illness data that employers are already compiling and recording.  This data will enable OSHA to more effectively apply its resources for enforcement and compliance.  Data varies depending on the size of company and industry type, but the objective is to improve workplace safety while providing valuable information about employers to internal and external stakeholders and the public.

OSHA plans to facilitate electronic submittal via a secure website offering three options which is scheduled to go live in February 2017:

1)  Manually entering data into a web form

2)  Uploading a CSV file

3)  Transmitting data via an API (application programming interface) for those users that are currently using an automated system

What All Employers Should Know

Employers with 250 or more employees:  You’ll need to submit forms 300A, 300 and 301 electronically which will be due July 1, 2018 for the year 2017.  If you are not currently using an automated system, it is time to begin using an EHS software product, such as Ex3, for electronic recordkeeping and the ability to interface directly with OSHA.

Employers with 20 – 249 employees: Depending on your industry type, you may be able to continue using your spreadsheets.  Check industry type for your compliance requirements.

You can read the Final Rule to get up to speed and avoid surprises.

Anti-retaliation Protections

Employers are also required to inform employees of their right to report any and all work-related injuries and illnesses free from retaliation.  Although this provision became effective in August 2016, OSHA began enforcing it in December 2016.

This also solidifies the case for providing your employees with a user-friendly EHS system that is comprehensive and well-integrated as having a slow and complicated process can be considered as discouraging your employees from reporting workplace injuries.

Ex3 gives all US employees paid time off to go VOTE!

Today, Ex3 has chosen to give all of our US employees as much time as they need for the purpose of voting. We believe that this is an extremely important right and an obligation for every citizen and nothing should stand in the way of that happening. “The election process is simply too important to all of us and the outcomes, especially in this election, affect every aspect of our lives.” said Nathan R Giles, Ex3 President and CEO. “We want every one of our employees to enjoy the freedom of expressing thier voice in the political process.”

OSHA Recordable Trend Down 13 years Running

Assistant Secretary of Labor Dr. David Michaels encouraged by BLS report on occupational injuries and illnesses in 2015

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics recently released data that indicates a continued drop in the recordable rate for occupational injuries and illnesses across the US for the 2015 year.  This continues a trend over the last 13 years with only one year (2012) slightly out of that pattern.

“Private industry employers reported about 2.9 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in 2015, representing a decline of about 48,000 from 2014, despite an increase in total hours worked. The rate of cases recorded was 3.0 cases per 100 full-time workers – down from 3.2 in 2014. The rate is the lowest recorded since at least 2002, when OSHA recordkeeping requirements were modified.”

Having worked in this industry for over twenty years now, I tend to see things from an insider perspective. While many of our Ex3 customers have been able to achieve rates in the .02 to 1.0, range we see many companies that don’t seem to understand the value of safety and show rates much higher. The 3.0 rate reported by BLS is an average across all US employers. Bottom line is that 2.9 million people still suffered work related “recordable” injuries or illnesses meaning that they were serious enough to affect the ability to work in some manner.  Many companies continue to show rates far above the 3.0. The statistic is thus heavily weighted. Companies that are serious about health and safety significantly off set the poor performers.

There is still much work to be done to keep all employees safe.  The value of life is priceless and we owe it to all employees to do what it takes to provide them with a safe working environment.  Presumably, due to current economics,  we have recently encountered a larger than normal number of companies who, while stating  that they are serious about their safety programs, aim to save money by lowering or even eliminating the budget for an effective EHS software management system to track their data. If you don’t effectively track it, you can’t effectively manage it.  Speadsheets dont cut it! The culture of safety starts with doing the right thing on all levels. This includes implementation of a user-friendly, cohesive EHS management system that gives you timely access to your employees’ work habits and safety procedures.  This will, as has been proven time and again, provide you with a tremendous ROI on your most valuable asset, your employees.

Over the last twenty years Ex3 has worked with many of the world’s leading companies to help them identify hazards and associated risks, to mitigate those risks and to keep their employee populations, customers and communities safe. We are proud to be part of the community of EHS professionals who have dedicated their lives to protecting others and also proud of the incredible successes we’ve been able to show for our customers. One death per month in the US mining industry? Still way too many!

October 4th 2016, I just received Coal Mine Fatalgram #8 for 2016 from MSHA, the Mining Safety and Health Administration in the US. Last year there were 9. Last week I received Metal/NonMetal Fatalgram #12 for 2016. More than one death per month is just too many. But, I also receive MSHA serious injury notices almost every week. For the last twenty years I have worked to improve safety performance in many of the worlds largest companies and across multiple industries. I have worked in the US, across Europe and in Asia and the Middle East and implemented lean processes, efficient business models and integrated software systems for Health, wellness and safety management. In every country, Mining is the industry that I have found to be most resistant to any ideas, systems or improvements. It is a closed door. No one wants to admit there is a problem. They will do the minimum required and that is all, beyond that they want no visibility to outsiders.

This baffles me because mining accidents have the potential to be extremely serious and highly visible. If for no other reason safety should be a high priority and a major concern simply for the PR repercussions. There may be a few mining companies that are serious about safety beyond lip service.  However, fear of exposure often outweighs their willingness to improve on safety procedures and processes. Safety matters EVERYWHERE and even one death is too many.

Do you work in the mining industry? Have thoughts about Safety? Let’s hear your comments. How can we do better?

Olympic Sized Support.

If you google ‘Olympic Mindset,’ you’ll get a plethora of blogs, articles and interviews on how to cultivate and foster a winning and success-oriented mind. We all revel in the art of competition and wonder about the dedication and discipline it takes to be included in the roster of the best of the best. Most of these articles, inspire and encourage the reader to develop a never-giving up spirit or to consider failure as steps toward future success. While the desire to succeed is a human trait, unless we were lucky enough to have a support network of loved ones during our critical growth years as teenagers or younger, most of us are unfamiliar with the art of asking for support. An Olympic athlete needs to be disciplined and dedicated to get to practice day after day, but the coach is the sturdy support that creates the foundation for the athlete’s support. Without the coach, the athlete may never flourish into an Olympian.

Asking for Support

We may be able to dream and fantasize about how life would be so much more pleasant if we were given support by our partners, coworkers and managers, but lack the ability to articulate our need for support and guidance. Perhaps, the fear of appearing weak or incompetent stops us from voicing the need for support. Or perhaps being afraid of getting judged or labeled by our coworkers or managers prevents us from asking for the tools we need to perform our job more efficiently and effectively. Whatever, the reason, the fact remains that those of us who are able to look past the fears and judgment can develop the courage to seek guidance, couching and support that ultimately leads to the path of success.
It is the ability to provide support and assistance that has made Ex3 a success for the past 25 years. We understand this critical link to success is the foundation for effective implementation of our software suite and offering.
While you have been busy building your department, reaching your annual goals and cultivating a strong organizational culture, we have been developing the software that supports your organizational goals.

Seeking Partnerships

How would your decision making be impacted if you felt supported by your colleagues, vendors and managers? While we are not here to change the culture within your organization, we can and will provide you with the software tools that support you to fulfill the daily demands of your organization. Whether your need is to measure your athlete’s performance, or prepare on-demand reports for analytics, or simply maintain an up-to-date accident and injury report, our comprehensive suite of data management software will seamlessly provide the means for quick and accurate data gathering so you can feel like the peak performance athlete with an effective support network. So before you throw in the towel and become frustrated with the overwhelming number of projects tugging at you daily, begin to take a look at the support tools around you and follow these steps to transform your experience:

  1. Hire for talent. One really good resource can outperform a pool of fakers.
  2. Make sure your IT staff gets the proper training. Technology changes daily and you have to keep up. If you have an inadequate training budget then you’re falling behind.
  3. If you’re using contractors make sure each resource actually knows what they’re doing. One bad resource can kill your project.
  4. Hire seasoned project managers that can see through the smoke. You have to be able to recognize a fake when you see one.
  5. Always work from well defined specs. Every project must have clear set expectations and clear requirements in order to function.
  6. Don’t get caught up trying to implement the latest “IT Buzz Word!”
